Socratic seminar is an excellent form of formative and self-assessment. It is based on the premise that together, we all know more than any one of us alone, and that by sharing our individual interpretations, personal connections and questions, we can build a deeper understanding together. Socratic seminar allows students to continue learning throughout the assessment process. Students build their core competencies through critical thinking and questioning, drawing on one anther's perspectives to improve everyone's understanding and building self-awareness as they draw on their own strengths to direct the dialogue.
This example rubric can be used for any Socratic seminar. The attached written assessment was designed for a social studies 10 unit on political, social and economic changes in the 1920s, but can be easily adapted to match the topic or problem under discussion. |
